Visiting Maine
73Ram Island Light, Maine
Places to go and things to see and do
I nwas born in Maine and always look forward to going back for a visit. Of course, there is never enough time to see and do all that I would like. Here are some highlights from this summer’s trip back home. This itinerary would give you a wonderful seven to ten day trip for the whole family.
The largest lake in Maine, Moosehead Lake is a wonderful sailing area
The Lakes
Some of the most beautiful lakes in the country are located in Maine. The views are spectacular and the waters are clear and cold. The fishing is wonderful and the wildlife abundant. Visit Greenville on the shore of Moosehead Lake. The lake is 40 miles long by 10 miles wide and contains over 80 islands. It is quintessential Maine. Just outside Greenville is a spot frequented by moose and, if you are patient, you will get a photo to take home to amaze your friends. Stop at the visitor’s center on the way into Greenville for a map and information on available tours.
While in the area, visit Lakeshore Lunch restaurant in Dexter for great meals at very reasonable prices. The children can swim in the lake behind the restaurant and you can walk up to the window and get hand dipped ice cream for dessert.
Lakeshore Lunch, Crockett Road, Dexter Maine, 04930, Phone: (207) 924-3016
This is as close to real local Maine family cuisine as you can get and you will be glad you stopped.

Travel on down toward the coast on US route 1 toward Bar Harbor. Follow it onto Mt. Desert Island. Located in Frenchman’s Bay, the island is dominated by Cadillac Mountain and Acadia National Park. Originally, the playgrounds for the very rich and famous, these are some of the most beautiful vistas on the east coast. Plan to stay at least two days, soak in the beauty, and enjoy a multitude of activities.
Bar Harbor, Maine
Bar Harbor Area
The range of accommodations covers the gamut from tent camping in Acadia National Park to the indulgent and luxurious amenities of The Bluenose Inn and The Bar Harbor Inn. We have stayed at both hotels and can recommend them highly. While the room rates seem high at first, consider the package deals and what is included and you can actually get very good value.
The Bar Harbor Inn
First Class Vacation Bargain
As an example, the “Spring Fling” package at the Bar Harbor Inn ranges from $425.00 and up for two nights, depending on the room you choose but it includes:
· A lobster Bake for two (about $80)
· Two breakfasts for two ($75 total)
· A full dinner for two in the dining room (about $115 to $120)
· A cruise on the four-masted schooner, Margaret Todd ($68 total) or tour of Acadia Park
· A $20 gift shop coupon
· All taxes and gratuities
The “extras” included in the rate add up to $358.00 so the actual cost of the room is ridiculously low. The packages at The Bluenose Inn are just as reasonable. In both cases, you will stay in some of the most luxurious, and friendly accommodations you will ever experience. Visit the websites for more information.

The view from the top of Cadillac Mountain
Cadillac Mountain
Drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain. There is no charge but donations help support one of this country’s most beautiful parks. At 1540 feet above sea level, the views are fantastic and there is a visitor’s center and hiking trails for the more adventurous. Consider taking a picnic lunch and just enjoy the crisp clear mountain air. There are many hiking trails and campsites in the area for those who enjoy the great outdoors or travel on a budget.
Along the coast
Continue driving along the coast on Route 1 south and stop in Camden with its picture perfect harbor and multitude of gift shops and art galleries. From Bar Harbor, you can be there for lunch or continue on to Lincolnville for lunch at The Lobster Pound,
In Rockland, the harbor views are classic Maine. Camden and Rockland are home to the Maine Windjammer fleet and there are events throughout the season. Check the website for schedules and details. Consider taking a cruise on a tall ship.
A recommended place to stay in Rockland is the Trade Winds Motor Inn, on the waterfront. We have stayed there repeatedly and have never been disappointed. Located on the waterfront and in the heart of downtown, you can walk to most attractions and activities. The rates are reasonable and the restaurant is quite good. Book early for special events such as the Windjammer Days. A day cruise to Vinalhaven Island is worthwhile and offers many photo opportunities.

Rockland Harbor
Boothbay Harbor
A deep bay that is still a working port, Boothbay Harbor is tucked into a cove at the end of the bay. There are several fine restaurants in town. Try McSeagull’s for dinner. It is highly recommended and a favorite of locals. One of the best-kept secrets is Dunton’s Doghouse on Sea Street. This little roadside stand has picnic tables outside and makes the best lobster roll we have ever tasted at a very reasonable price. Service is fast and friendly and I have not seen a stand like this in many years. Be sure to stop by. You will not be disappointed.
There are the usual cruises available for whale watching, lighthouse tour and harbor cruise. Art galleries and gift shops are scattered throughout downtown. A major attraction that is a must-see is the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, located at 132 Botanical Garden Drive, Boothbay, ME 04537. Call (207) 633-4333 for information. The extensive grounds have something for everyone including a Children’s Garden and a garden designed to appeal to all the senses. It is a true treasure hidden in the woods of Maine.
Take a drive out route 96 to the point east of Boothbay Harbor and get a wonderful view of the islands and some of the lighthouses. You will see some of the truly classic Maine coastal cottages along the way.
Accommodations in Boothbay Harbor are varied but check out the many beautiful old houses that are now B&B’s. You will find that the prices cover the gamut and fit every pocketbook.
If you have never been to Maine, go check it out. Whatever your interest, you will find it here. The people are wonderfully friendly and helpful. On our second day in Boothbay Harbor, we encountered a woman on her way to a garden club luncheon who told us how to find the Botanical Gardens and suggested two wonderful places to eat. That woman enhanced our Boothbay Harbor experience for us and left us with fond memories, and we thank her.
Take that trip to Maine; you will be glad you did.
